Bonner Chair in Lung Research. He graduated summa cum laude from Amherst College in 1977 and received an MD and PhD in Molecular Biology and Genetics at Johns Hopkins University in 1985. He then did an Internal Medicine internship and residency at Johns Hopkins Hospital through 1988 followed by a Medical Oncology fellowship \nat the National Cancer Institute in Bethesda\, MD. At Vanderbilt he was Professor of Medicine\, Cell Biology\, and Cancer Biology\, and Director of the Thoracic/Head and Neck Cancer Program\, Director and Principal Investigator of the Vanderbilt Specialized Program of Research Excellence (SPORE) in Lung Cancer for 11 years and PI of the Strategic Partnering to Evaluate Cancer Signatures (SPECS) in Lung Cancer UO1 consortium. He was recruited to The Ohio State University in 2012 to direct the James Thoracic Oncology Center. \nHis research interests\, grant support and publications have been focused on lung cancer\, and specifically lung cancer genetics\, cancer immunotherapy\, tumor-associated immunosuppression mechanisms. He has over 300+ peer-reviewed publications\, books and review articles\, has served on several NCI grant review panels\, including the clinical program project parent committee\, \nand has continuous NCI funding since early in his career. He has served on the Board of Scientific Counselors for the NCI and as Chair of the Lung Biology subcommittee for the Eastern Cooperative Oncology Group. His a Past President of the International Association for the Study of Lung Cancer (IASLC) and currently co-chair of the NCI/CTEP Thoracic Malignancy Steering Committee. \nDr Manel Haj Mansour\nManel Haj is a Consultant Medical Oncologist and Section Head of Medical Oncology at Aga Khan University Hospital\, Nairobi. She is also the current Fellowship Program Director in The Department of Hematology Oncology. \nShe graduated from the University Tunis\, and undertook her Core Internal Medicine and Medical Oncology training the most prestigious University Hospitals in Tunisia where she received her certificate of completion in 2017. She has also received part of training at the Gustave Roussy Institute of cancer treatment in Paris\, France. \nShe has previously worked as consultant medical oncologist and lecturer at Abdurrahman Mami University Hospital\, Tunisia and at a leading health care facility in Nairobi.\nDr Haj is passionate about increasing cancer awareness and promoting screening and early detection. She has also a special interest in precision oncology and clinical research and is currently investigator in several clinical trials in the Cancer Research Unit at Aga Khan University Hospital. \nShe is a member of American (ASCO)\, European (ESMO) \,Tunisian and Kenyan societies of medical oncology ((STOM  and KESHO). \nDr Allan Njau\nAllan Njau is an Assistant Professor in the department of Pathology and Laboratory Medicine at the Aga Khan University Hospital. He holds a bachelor’s degree in medicine and surgery from the University of Nairobi (2008)\, Master of medicine in Anatomic Pathology from the Aga Khan University (2016) and a fellowship in Molecular Pathology from Augusta University\, GA\, USA (2020). His interests are in the fields of precision medicine\, molecular assays especially for oncology and has a vibrant research agenda in the areas of lung cancer\, pathology informatics\, endometrial carcinoma\, extrapulmonary tuberculosis\, Covid-19\, gastric cancer and Helicobacter pylori infections. \nDr Njau is dynamic at adopting and developing molecular testing programs and is a proponent of building local capacity for precision medicine oncology. In addition\, she obtained a 5-year board certification in Medical Oncology from ESMO in 2019. She has over 17 years of experiences in hospital and clinical settings. \nShe is a member of the Kenya Society of Haematology and Oncology (KESHO)\, European Society of Medical Oncology (ESMO) and American Society of Clinical Oncology (ASCO). She is also a fellow of the East\, Central and Southern Africa College of Physicians. \nHer core skills are in clinical decision making in internal medicine and oncology\, conducting trainings\, streamlining medical education and conducting research as well as participation in the development of treatment guidelines and protocols. \nDr McLigeyo currently provides comprehensive oncology healthcare at both public and private health facilities\, conducts research in oncology and internal medicine when opportunities arise\, and is engaged in teaching internal medicine and oncology at the Kenyatta University. She has authored several research articles in peer reviewed journals and presented abstracts at several conferences. \nProfessor Parmenas Oroko\nParmenas Kibagendi Oroko is a distinguished orthopaedic surgeon and Clinical Associate Professor at Aga Khan University Hospital Nairobi. He is also the current chairman of the Kenya Orthopaedic Association. He holds an impressive array of qualifications including MBChB\, M.Med (Surgery)\, FRCS (Ed)\, FRCSEd (Tr & Orth)\, and FRCS Eng (Tr & Orth). Specializing in lower limb arthroplasty\, pelvic and acetabular reconstruction\, as well as knee and shoulder arthroscopic surgery\, Prof. Oroko has established himself as a leading expert in his field. \nProf Oroko’s professional journey began in 1986 as a tutorial fellow at the University of Nairobi. His dedication to orthopaedics took him to the UK where he trained and worked as a consultant orthopaedic surgeon\, specializing in lower limb arthroplasty. Upon returning to Kenya in 2011\, he continued his practice and introduced advanced surgical techniques at Aga Khan University Hospital. \nHe is heavily involved in training and mentoring residents\, aiming to improve orthopaedic practice in the region. His research focuses on orthopaedic trauma and arthroplasty\, with his work presented at various local and international conferences. \nProf Oroko’s vision is to develop a center of excellence in orthopaedics in East Africa\, providing top-quality services and training future specialists in the region. \nDr Rogers Mongare (Moderator)\nRogers Mongare is a Clinical and Radiation Oncologist at the Cancer Treatment Centre\, Kenyatta National Hospital (KNH) with special interest in Head & Neck\, GIT\, Sarcomas\, Urological\, Breast and Gynaecological malignancies. He conducts clinical practice and clinical teaching at the largest referral hospital in the region. \nHe is an honorary lecturer in Radiation Oncology at the Department of Diagnostic Imaging and Radiation Medicine\, University of Nairobi. He is an active participant at the KNH multidisciplinary tumour boards working closely with other specialists in patient care. DESCRIPTION:[vc_row][vc_column][vc_column_text]Dr Zipporah Ali \nZipporah Ali is a Palliative Care Physician and a Public Health Specialist and is the currently an independent consultant.  She serves on the boards of Kenya Hospices and Palliative Care Association (KEHPCA) and the African Palliative Care Association (APCA). She is the recent past chair of the NCD Alliance Kenya (NCDAK) and the past Vice President of Africa Organization for Research & Training in Cancer (AORTIC) East Africa. \nDr Ali was the Executive Director of Kenya Hospices and Palliative Care Association (KEHPCA)\, a position she held for 14 years before she retired in 2021. She also worked in the first hospice in Kenya-Nairobi Hospice as the Senior Medical Officer for over 14 years before she left to set up KEHPCA. In her retirement\, she continues to be involved in advocacy and creating awareness on NCDS including cancer. She has received a number of awards for her work in palliative care nationally\, regionally and globally. These include: \n\nEuropean Association for Palliative Care (EAPC) Palliative Care Leadership Award 2023\nDoctor of Law Honoris Causa-University of Dundee (2018) in recognition for her work in palliative care regionally and globally\nInternational Humanitarian Award-Women4Africa (2018)\nSocial Impact Award for the Sub-Saharan Africa region-British Council (2018)\nHonorary Doctor of the University by Oxford Brookes University (2012)\nIndividual Advocacy Award by the African Palliative Care Association and Open Society Foundations (2013\n\nDr Joyfrida Chepchumba\nJoyfrida Chepchumba is a pharmacist working with the Ministry of Health\, Kenya for over 10 years in the public health system. She holds a Master’s degree in Health Economics and Policy and a Bachelor Degree in Pharmacy both from the University of Nairobi. She is currently the Program Officer in charge of Treatment\, Palliative Care\, and Survivorship Pillar at the National Cancer Control Program. She coordinates all activities pertaining to cancer treatment\, including partnering with health experts in both public and private sector to develop policies and guidelines to inform best practice in cancer treatment. She has coordinated development of several health policies related to cancer management including the first Kenyan Palliative Care Policy\, the National Radiotherapy protocols and Rehabilitation guidelines for children with cancer. She also oversees the M-saratani mobile platform\, an e-learning platform which hosts content on early diagnosis of cancer targeting primary healthcare workers in the country. \nShe has submitted abstracts to different local and international conferences including the World Cancer Congress (2022)\, Kenya Society of Hematology and Oncology (2022)\, Oncology Nurses Chapter (2022) PSK (2015). \nShe is passionate about collaborations in developing robust heath systems to improve the quality of life for patients in the oncology space. \nDr Deborah Omeddo\nDeborah Omeddo is a Paediatric Haematologist and Oncologist working in Kisii Teaching and Referral Hospital. \nShe holds a Master’s in Paediatrics and Child Health from the University of Nairobi. She did her fellowship training at Makerere University. \nDr Omeddo strives to provide quality health services to children living with cancer and blood diseases. Her vision is that all children in Kenya will have access to quality healthcare services regardless of location and socio-economic status. \nDr Pavanraj Chana\nPavanraj Singh Chana is a Kenyan board-certified Medical Officer. His aspirations for pursuing medicine started as a childhood/paediatric cancer survivor treated for advanced head and neck embryonal rhabdomyosarcoma. Despite collateral damage and several drawbacks\, he completed his schooling in Nairobi\, obtained his medical degree in 2021 at Moi University in Eldoret and completed his medical internship in PCEA Kikuyu Mission Hospital. He has been keen to advance in clinical care\, education and research since he was a medical student by working with the International Cancer Institute\, and with the Aga Khan University Hospital Clinical Research Unit as a Medical Officer. Within and beyond these capacities\, he has been involved in a number of activities including compiling education material\, conducting education sessions\, developing audio-visual publications\, leading support groups\, engaging in screening and clinical work\, contributing to multi-disciplinary research work and been part of several clinical trial programs. He has also been supporting the Secretariat and Chairperson/President in administrative/coordinating tasks and the development of the East Central & Southern Africa College of Oncologists (ECSACO). \nDr. Chana distinguished himself early as a Medical Student and Doctor. He has presented Research work at several Conferences and is active in several Community Outreach activities. As an international and local executive member of the Beyond Sciences Initiative (BSI)\, he has helped initiate and implement a mentorship program for vulnearable populations including street youth and refugees\, developed drug adherence programs\, delivered health education and motivational talks in various forums. He has also been focused on developing evidence-based innovative solutions to medical challenges. He is ambitious to use these qualities in his aspirations to pursue residency in Internal Medicine and a fellowship in Medical Oncology and Hematology to eventually serve populations in sub-Saharan Africa. \nMs Benda Kithaka (Moderator)\nBenda Kithaka is a Health Advocacy & Behaviour Change Communications Specialist\, with over 20 years’ experience in communications\, research\, and health advocacy. \nShe is the founder of KILELE Health Association\, a Kenyan non-profit organization located in Nairobi\, with a mandate to operate in the country’s 47 Counties. \nKILELE Health specializes in empowering people living with chronic conditions (cancer and other NCDs) and their caregivers to use their lived experiences as advocacy tools for disease prevention\, stigma reduction and improvement of quality of life beyond the diagnosis.  The organization is committed to engaging members and other stakeholders in improving the understanding of quality of life issues. Current programmes focus on advocacy\, behaviour change communications\, capacity building\, and exchange of best practice\, research\, and resourcing. This is achieved through promotion of physical activity\, mental wellness\, financial wellness and pursuit of optimal health; as tools for the attainment of wellbeing. \nBenda sits on various global\, regional and local Technical Working Groups in an advocacy and advisory role. She co-chairs the AORTIC Advocacy Special Interest Group regionally in Africa\, and in Kenya is Co-Chair of the STOP Cervical Cancer technical working group. She is also a Trainer\, Facilitator and Public Speaker in advocacy for Women’s Health. Previously she served on the Board of Women4Cancer for nine years\, a Kenyan NGO she co-founded in 2012\, whose Vision is a Cervical Cancer Free Kenya. \nShe has received various awards including the International Gynecologic Cancer Society (IGCS) Distinguished Advocacy Award 2019\, the Union for International Cancer Control (UICC) award to participate as the civil society voice in the Regional Consultation on the Elimination of Cervical Cancer in the African Region (May 2019). He was formerly Professor of Medicine at the University of Nairobi\, Kenya\, where he was the director of Medical Oncology Fellowship Program and also the head of Haematology/Oncology at the University of Nairobi and Kenyatta National Hospital\, Nairobi. In 2009 and 2010 he was Head of Oncology at Aga Khan University Hospital\, Nairobi. \nHe holds a Master’s degree in Internal Medicine of the University of Nairobi\, completed fellowship in Medical Oncology at the Royal London Hospital (University of London) in 1992\, and is a Fellow of the Royal College of Physicians of Edinburgh. \nHis research interests are in malignant haematology and breast cancer\, in which he has published widely in peer-reviewed journals. He also has keen interest in molecular oncology. He has also authored a text book titled Drug Treatment of Haematologic Neoplasms. She also serves on both local and international Advisory Boards.  She was trained professionally at the University of Witwatersrand (Wits) in Johannesburg\, and she was involved previously with the Wits HREC (Human Research Ethics Committee).  She is a co-organizer in the recent SASMO/SASCETS congress (Cape Town)\, 4-7 April 2024\, and the skin cancer symposium (Cape Town)\, 1-2 March 2024. \nDr Esther Gathura (Moderator)\nDr Esther Wangui Gathura is a Senior Instructor and Consultant in Plastic and Reconstructive Surgeon\, based at the Aga Khan University Hospital in Nairobi. Her main areas of interest are in Skin Cancer Management\, Burns and Hand Surgery. She also conducts Breast Reconstruction\, Lower Limb Reconstruction and Aesthetic Surgery. \nShe attained her undergraduate qualification in Medicine (MBBS) from the University of London\, St Georges Medical School in 2008 where she qualified with multiple Merit Awards\, along with an Intercalated BSc degree in Anatomy.  Dr Gathura completed foundation medical training in the the London Deanery at the Guys and St Thomas’ Hospital following which she embarked on Core Surgical Training Yorkshire and Humber Deanery in the UK where she was first exposed to Plastic and Reconstructive Surgery at the Leeds General Infirmary. She gained the Membership of the Royal College of Surgeons qualification in 2011. Following this she then successfully applied for the competitive National Training Programme in Plastic Surgery and was placed in the East of England Deanery where she rotated in various internationally renowned Plastic Surgery Centres in the region and was exposed to various disciplines\, including Skin Cancer Management\, Head and Neck Cancer Reconstruction\, Breast Reconstruction\, Hand Surgery Burn Care and Aesthetic Surgery and Microsurgery. She is a clinical researcher with special interest in HPV-associated cancers particularly cervical cancer\, pediatric gynecological cancers and palliative care with publications and ongoing research projects on the same. \nShe graduated as a fellow and Early Career Faculty Mentor for the International Gynecologic Cancer Society (IGCS) as well as the International Cancer Institute (ICI). She completed her Editorial fellowship and has started her tenure as a reviewer for the International Journal of Gynecological Cancer (IJGC). She is also IGCS certified in the Palliative Care Program and as a Trainer of Trainers for the Preinvasive Disease Program and recently selected to be the co-chair of the Palliative Care Work group for IGCS. \nDr Anisa serves as an expert advisor for the WHO sub-committee on the Cervical Cancer Elimination Strategy through Surgical Capacity Building. She undertook a fellowship in Medical Oncology at Barts Health NHS Trust in the United Kingdom attaining a Specialist Certificate in Medical Oncology from the Royal College of Physicians and Association of Cancer Physicians in the United Kingdom. She also has a Master of Science in Advanced Oncology from Ulm University in Germany. \nHer research interests in breast cancer\, lung cancer and CML. \nDr Eric Hungu\nEric Hungu is a surgeon based at Kenyatta National Hospital\, the biggest referral hospital in East Africa. He runs a reputable breast clinic at the hospital. He undertook a one-year sub-specialty training in Breast and Endocrine Surgery at The University of Cape Town in 2017. \nHe has been involved in the drafting of National Cancer Screening Guidelines and National Cancer Treatment Protocols as an advisor to the Ministry of Health\, under the National Cancer Control Programme (NCCP). He also serves in the Surgical Society of Kenya National Council having served in various capacities since 2011. \nDr. Hungu completed his Masters training in General Surgery at The University of Nairobi in 2011. Subsequently\, he was posted to Lodwar where he worked for one year as the District Surgeon: the only surgeon between South Sudan and Eldoret. During this period\, he was on the panel of the AMREF Flying Doctors where he would carry out week long surgical outreach initiatives in the remote areas that have no access to surgeons. He was formerly Professor of Medicine at the University of Nairobi\, Kenya\, where he was the director of Medical Oncology Fellowship Program and also the head of Haematology/Oncology at the University of Nairobi and Kenyatta National Hospital\, Nairobi. In 2009 and 2010 he was Head of Oncology at Aga Khan University Hospital\, Nairobi. \nHe holds a Master’s degree in Internal Medicine of the University of Nairobi\, completed fellowship in Medical Oncology at the Royal London Hospital (University of London) in 1992\, and is a Fellow of the Royal College of Physicians of Edinburgh. \nHis research interests are in malignant haematology and breast cancer\, in which he has published widely in peer-reviewed journals. He also has keen interest in molecular oncology. He has also authored a text book titled Drug Treatment of Haematologic Neoplasms. He has also co-authored cancer booklets\, and has written chapters in several books. His latest book titled ‘Shadow in Perpetuity’ by Lambert Publishers was released in December 2019. \nDr. Othieno-Abinya is a member of American Society of Clinical Oncology (ASCO)\, and served in its International Affairs Committee from 2010-2012; Africa Organization for Research and Training in Cancer (AORTIC)\, having been Vice Chair for Eastern Africa and was a long time member of Council; and European Society for Medical Oncology (ESMO). He founded Kenya Society of Haematology and Oncology (KESHO)\, of which he was the first Chair\, and is still its Patron. He also teaches at various Universities in SSA and participates in Scientific Review Committees (SRC) of various Oncology Clinical Trial Centers in SSA. \nDr Manel Haj Mansoor \nManel Haj is a Consultant Medical Oncologist and Section Head of Medical Oncology at Aga Khan University Hospital\, Nairobi. She is also the current Fellowship Program Director in The Department of Hematology Oncology. \nShe graduated from the University Tunis\, and undertook her Core Internal Medicine and Medical Oncology training the most prestigious University Hospitals in Tunisia where she received her certificate of completion in 2017. She has also received part of training at the Gustave Roussy Institute of cancer treatment in Paris\, France. \nShe has previously worked as consultant medical oncologist and lecturer at Abdurrahman Mami University Hospital\, Tunisia and at a leading health care facility in Nairobi. \nDr Haj is passionate about increasing cancer awareness and promoting screening and early detection. She has also a special interest in precision oncology and clinical research and is currently investigator in several clinical trials in the Cancer Research Unit at Aga Khan University Hospital. \nShe is a member of American (ASCO)\, European (ESMO) \,Tunisian and Kenyan societies of medical oncology ((STOM and KESHO). \nDr Lillian Ouma \nLilian Ouma holds a Bachelor of Medicine and Surgery (MBChB) Degree from Moi University in Eldoret\, Kenya. As a medical doctor and current head of clinical research at the International Cancer Institute\, she provides oversight on various clinical research projects. In this capacity\, she is in charge of the management of both observational and interventional research projects\, in various therapeutic fields\, ensuring all study activities are conducted according to the study protocols. In her current capacity as the research manager\, she has played a pivotal role in the establishment of research processes/systems within the research unit. \nShe is tasked with the responsibility of coordinating the execution of clinical trial protocols\, overseeing participant recruitment and retention activities\, and executing clinical quality and data quality management plans. While at Washington University School of Medicine\, she went on to complete a Hematology/Oncoloy fellowship\, serving as Chief Fellow\, where she received the Hanna Jean Khoury Outstanding Graduate Award. Dr. Bagegni is board-certified in internal medicine\, medical oncology\, and hematology. Dr. Bagegni specializes in the care of patients with early-stage and advanced breast cancer. \nDr. Bagegni has research interests focused on developing novel therapies for breast cancer and disease monitoring strategies. He undertook a one-year sub-specialty training in Breast and Endocrine Surgery at The University of Cape Town in 2017. \nHe has been involved in the drafting of National Cancer Screening Guidelines and National Cancer Treatment Protocols as an advisor to the Ministry of Health\, under the National Cancer Control Programme (NCCP). He also serves in the Surgical Society of Kenya National Council having served in various capacities since 2011. \nDr. Hungu completed his Masters training in General Surgery at the University of Nairobi in 2011. Subsequently\, he was posted to Lodwar where he worked for one year as the District Surgeon: the only surgeon between South Sudan and Eldoret. During this period\, he was on the panel of the AMREF Flying Doctors where he would carry out week long surgical outreach initiatives in the remote areas that have no access to surgeons. As a trainee she has been awarded the Abstract Achievement Award from the American Society of Hematology (ASH) during the ASH Annual Meeting and the Travel Grant from the European Hematology Association (EHA) during EHA annual meeting. She is a Fellow of the Royal College of Pathologists\, United Kingdom and a Fellow of the College of Pathologists of East Central and Southern Africa. \nDr. Sayed is the Secretary General of the College of Pathologists of East Central and Southern Africa\, Chair of the Academic Committee of the Senate – East Central and Southern African (ECSA) College of Health Sciences\, Chair of theBoard of Directors of African Strategies for Advancing Pathology (ASAP\, co-chair Technical Working Group (TWG) on Diagnostics for the Cancer Control Programme – Ministry of Health\, Kenya (MoH). \nShe is also a steering committee member and Commissioner for the Lancet Commission on Diagnostics and a member of the Lancet Oncology Commission for Sub-Saharan Africa. She has also been a recent member of the WHO-SAGE IVD Committee (2019-2020). Dr. Sayed is a member of the United States and Canadian Academy of Pathology (USCAP) and the American Society of Clinical Oncology (ASCO). \nDr. Sayed is in charge of the breast service at AKUHN. Her research interest span oncopathology with a special focus in breast cancer and solid haematolymphoid malignancies. She has several grants and peer reviewed publications in her area of research interest. She has also led research initiatives and interventions that have developed a sustainable model of community-based engagement to improve breast cancer screening and diagnosis. \nProf Mansoor Saleh\nMansoor Saleh\, MD received his early education in the Aga Khan School system in East Africa\, his medical education at the University of Heidelberg in Germany and conducted his doctoral research at the Max Planck Institute for Medical Research in Heidelberg. \nHe received his training in internal medicine at the Henry Ford Hospital in Detroit Michigan and clinical and translational research training in Hematology & Oncology at the University of Alabama Comprehensive Cancer Center in Birmingham\, Alabama where he was tenured Professor of Medicine & Pathology and Director of the First-in-Human Early Drug Development Program. At Memorial Sloan Kettering\, he worked with world-renowned colorectal surgeons and was involved in research projects in the institution as well as operating on patients using the most highly advanced surgical equipment\, including Robotic Colorectal Surgery for colon and rectal cancer. Dr Abdi has been part of local colorectal cancer trials with his mentor the late Prof Saidi Hassan\, and has published the most widely quoted colorectal cancer study in East Africa. \nDr Abdi works both in the private sector and public sector. He is the Chair of Surgery at the Aga Khan Hospital in Mombasa\, and is currently involved in treating cancer patients who need surgery in Mombasa. Is this an option in our setting?\n\n\n		\n	\n\n	\n		\n			SPEAKER PROFILES:\nProf Malkit Riyat\nMalkit Riyat is an Associate Professor in Haematology and Consultant Haematologist\, he completed his MBChB from the University of Nairobi in 1978. He was awarded a World Health Organization (WHO) scholarship and went on to do his membership in haematology from The Royal Infirmary\, Glasgow in 1987. He was appointed as a Fellow of the Royal College of Pathologists in Haematology in 1997. He was Conferred fellowship of the College of Pathologists East Central and Southern Africa in 2014. He obtained a Certificate of Competence in Malignant Lymphomas (CCL) in 2017 – 2018 from University of ULM\, Germany. \nProf. Riyat has authored multiple publications in peer review journals as well as many abstracts and has served on the editorial board of multiple peer review journals. He has been instrumental in graduate medical education\, developing the curricula for the clinical pathology residency program and served as the first program director when the residency was initially initiated at the Aga Khan University Hospital in Nairobi. In 2002 he successfully implemented and coordinated the GIPAP program in Kenya through which patients with CML\, GIST and several other disorders get free access to glivec. \nAreas of Interest\n\nMalignant Lymphomas\nMultiple Myeloma\nLow grade lymphoproliferative disorders (CLL\, follicular lymphomas\, Mantle Zone lymphomas etc)\nChronic myeloid leukemia (CML)\nMyeloproliferative neoplasms / Myelodysplastic syndromes (PRV\, ET\, PMF\, CMML)\nDeficiency anaemias\nSickle cell disease\nThrombotic and Hemostatic disorders\n\nDr Douglas Nyandika\nDouglas Nyandika is a Senior Registrar in Internal Medicine at the Nairobi Hospital\, and is currently a fellow in Medical Oncology at the University of Nairobi. \nHe holds a bachelor’s degree and master’s in Internal Medicine from the University of Nairobi. \nHis current interests are in both hematologic malignancies especially lymphomas and leukaemia’s. In the area of solid tumours\, he is interested in cancers of the breast\, GI cancers and lung cancers with integration of novel therapies in their management. \nDr Nyandika is fascinated by African writers like Chimamanda Ngozi\, Akwaeke Emezi and Jennifer Nansubuga. Inspired by spiritual books by Paulo Coelho\, Michael Singer\, and Eckhart Tolle. \n  \nDr Rohini Radia\nRohini Radia completed her medical degree and postgraduate sub-specialty training in the UK. She obtained her MBChB degree in 1999. She continued with postgraduate training and obtained the MRCP (UK) qualification in internal medicine in 2005. She was a Specialist Registrar in haematology on a 5 year training programme at University Hospitals Bristol NHS Trust and obtained FRCPath(Haem) in 2005. \nDuring her haematology training and work as a consultant\, she pursued an interest in malignant haematology and allogeneic transplantation. She has extensive experience in haematology with a special interest in myeloid malignancies and bone marrow transplantation\, including 10 years at consultant level at The Russell Centre for Clinical Haematology\, Nottingham University Hospitals NHS Trust. Dr Radia is a Kenyan and is keen to contribute her clinical expertise where there is a huge unmet clinical need in the area of stem cell transplantation. In January 2023\, she returned home and started as BMT Consultant at the The Nairobi West Hospital. \nHer BMT experience spans all aspects of stem cell transplantation from patient and donor selection to appropriate selection of conditioning protocol\, GVHD prophylaxis and post-transplant management of immune suppression\, acute and chronic GVHD and late effects. She worked closely with the Anthony Nolan transplant registry. She was the lead consultant for myelodysplasia\, GVHD and apheresis. Dr Radia carried out the first syngeneic stem cell transplant at Nottingham University Hospitals NHS Trust. Clinical research has been an interest she has consolidated by active participation in clinical trials. \nProf Nicholas Othieno-Abinya (Moderator)\nNicholas Anthony Othieno-Abinya is a Consultant Medical Oncologist at the Nairobi Hospital Cancer Centre. He was formerly Professor of Medicine at the University of Nairobi\, Kenya\, where he was the director of Medical Oncology Fellowship Program and also the head of Haematology/Oncology at the University of Nairobi and Kenyatta National Hospital\, Nairobi. In 2009 and 2010 he was Head of Oncology at Aga Khan University Hospital\, Nairobi. \nHe holds a Master’s degree in Internal Medicine of the University of Nairobi\, completed fellowship in Medical Oncology at the Royal London Hospital (University of London) in 1992\, and is a Fellow of the Royal College of Physicians of Edinburgh. \nHis research interests are in malignant haematology and breast cancer\, in which he has published widely in peer-reviewed journals. He also has keen interest in molecular oncology. He has also authored a text book titled Drug Treatment of Haematologic Neoplasms. He has also co-authored cancer booklets\, and has written chapters in several books. His latest book titled ‘Shadow in Perpetuity’ by Lambert Publishers was released in December 2019. \nDr. Othieno-Abinya is a member of American Society of Clinical Oncology (ASCO)\, and served in its International Affairs Committee from 2010-2012; Africa Organization for Research and Training in Cancer (AORTIC)\, having been Vice Chair for Eastern Africa and was a long time member of Council; and European Society for Medical Oncology (ESMO). He founded Kenya Society of Haematology and Oncology (KESHO)\, of which he was the first Chair\, and is still its Patron. DESCRIPTION:Dr Joyfrida Chepchumba\nJoyfrida Chepchumba is currently the Program Officer in charge of Treatment\, Palliative Care\, and Survivorship Pillar at the National Cancer Control Program. She coordinates all activities pertaining to cancer treatment\, including partnering with health experts in both public and private sector to develop policies and guidelines to inform best practice in cancer treatment. She has coordinated development of several health policies related to cancer management including the first Kenyan Palliative Care Policy. Other policy documents under development include the National Radiotherapy protocols and Rehabilitation guidelines for children with cancer. She also oversees the M-saratani mobile platform\, an e-learning platform which hosts content on early diagnosis of cancer targeting primary healthcare workers in the country. She has been working with the Ministry of Health\, Kenya for over 10 years in the public health system. \nShe is a pharmacist with a Master’s degree in Health Economics and Policy and a Bachelor Degree in Pharmacy both from the University of Nairobi. \nDr Chepchumba previously worked at the National Quality Control Laboratory for seven years as a senior analyst where she oversaw ensuring quality of medicines and medical products through standardized analytical procedures. She is an active member of the Pharmaceutical Society of Kenya (PSK) the umbrella body for all pharmacists in Kenya.\nShe has submitted abstracts to different local and international conferences including the World Cancer Congress (2022)\, Kenya Society of Hematology and Oncology (2022)\, Oncology Nurses Chapter (2022) PSK (2015). \nShe is passionate about collaborations in developing robust heath systems to improve the quality of life for patients in the oncology space. \nDr John Weru\nJohn Weru is an assistant Professor in Pain & Palliative Medicine at the Aga Khan University Hospital. He chairs the Hospital Ethics Committee at the institution and leads the East African Steering Committee in Palliative Care (EAPCSC) within the Aga Khan Health Services. He is the chair of the board of the Kenya Hospices and Palliative Care Association( KEHPCA). He is a faculty member with the ECHO-PACA II and the CK-BTI projects. \nHe is a peer reviewer with the Journal of Supportive Care in Cancer and sub-editor of the Palliative Medicine and Hospice Care Open journal. He has published peer reviewed articles and written multiple book chapters. He is the local PI for a multinational study ” ECHO Telementoring to Improve Quality of Palliative Care in Zambia\, Kenya\, Nigeria\, Ghana\, South Africa\, and India. \nLilian Obetto\nLilian is the CEO of Retailpay; a retail solution-oriented technology platform\, and a cancer warrior\, who believes that cancer does not define who she is and her quality of life after trans versing the cancer journey for well over a decade. \nBack in 2011 she had lumps on her breast and upon visiting a gynecologist\, she was misdiagnosed. In 2012. the lumps were bigger\, she had the first successful surgery\, a lumpectomy. In mid-2017\, there were metastases to the Femur bones and Nodes to the lungs\, Lilian had a surgery where she had a rod implant on her left hips; this was after she had done sessions of Radiotherapy\, chemotherapy\, thereafter oral tablets\, and Complex Chemotherapy which unfortunately\, Lilian could not afford to the end. \nIn May 2020\, Lilian started experiencing tremors in her hand and she suffered a mild stroke\, the cancer had spread to Lilian’s brain. In November 2021 her mobility was compromised\, leading to a brain surgery done in March 2022\, thereafter Bone brain craniotomy in February 2023. \nLilian visits and encourages other cancer warriors including children with cancer; she is grateful to The Rotary who play a key role in these activities. Lilian advocates for better cancer management to the government. In November 2019 when she was graciously invited to speak where the current head of state then Deputy President was the guest of Honor- to this end there were changes made upon her request to The Head of state. \nn March 2021 she initiated a cancer awareness talk in Nyakach\, where 40 people attended. She shares her journey on her first book called Unbowed- How God rescued me from different storms” In this book Lilian has penned down a message to the head of state once again and believes that he will continue listening and helping those affected with cancer. \nMrs Mercy Kamau\nMercy Kamau is a Senior Palliative Care Nurse\, Consultant and Trainer on health issues. She is a Kenya-registered Nurse/ Midwife. United Kingdom registered Nurse and holds a higher diploma in high dependency unit nursing. She has many years of clinical experience with the critically ill patients both in Kenya and United Kingdom. \nMercy worked as a clinical instructor at the Nairobi hospital and a senior nurse in Aga khan ICU\, Manchester NHS trust U.K in the Acute cardiology ward and head of clinical department at Nairobi hospice. \nShe holds a higher diploma in Palliative care from Oxford Brookes University and have a BSc in palliative care from Makerere university. \nMercy is currently pursuing a Master’s degree in Palliative care specializing in children palliative care at Makerere university. She trains at Nairobi Hospice as a part time lecturer in their palliative care diploma course\, affiliated to Oxford Brookes University. \nMuthoni Mate\nMuthoni Mate is a professional epidemiologist with over 15 years’ experience in health research and health systems strengthening within the African Continent. Her experience with end-to-end implementation of medical research programs and her aptitude for community-rooted solutions lend themselves very strongly to the type of solutions that Africa is moving towards. This involves the designing and implementing of innovative African health solutions with a global mindset. \nMuthoni is a person living with Cancer and her experience crystalized the realities of lack of reliable information\, under resources and a fragmented healthcare system on the outcomes of a cancer diagnosis. This redefined her world view and reaffirmed her contribution in the battle against all types of cancer which lead to the establishment of The Cancer Café (www.cancer-cafe.org) – an innovative non-profit organization that tailor- makes solutions for people living with cancer by linking them to resources and simplified\, holistic\, credible\, consistent information about cancer prevention\, management and rehabilitation. \nMuthoni has been involved in the generation and implementation of key governance in cancer prevention and management -The Kenya Cancer Policy 2019-2020 and the Kenya National Cancer Control Strategy 2012 – 2020 among others. \nShe also seats on various technical advisory forums\, The National Cancer institute of Kenya and the Non-Communicable Disease ICC Monitoring\, Evaluation and Research. She is also a Rotarian – a humanitarian institution with the mission of service above self. \nSidney Misigo Chahonyo\nSidney is a confident\, assertive\, goal-oriented professional\, with over 13 years’ experience in the public\, private and social impact sectors. Sidney is an 18-year cancer survivor (cancer of the postnasal space) dedicated to changing the cancer landscape and is passionate about creating lasting social impact with regard to holistic childhood cancer care in Kenya. \nHe serves as the Executive Director of Hope for Cancer Kids\, Kenya. He sits on the board of the Kenyan Network of Cancer Organizations (KENCO) and He is a member of the African Regional Committee of Childhood Cancer International (CCI). Sidney is a member of the technical working group for Childhood Cancer and also a member of the TWG on Prevention\, Screening\, & Early Detection (PSED) at the National Cancer Control Program\, Kenya. \nMs Benda N. Kithaka (Moderator)\nBenda Kithaka is a Health Advocacy & Behaviour Change Communications Specialist\, with over 20 years’ experience in communications\, research\, and health advocacy. \nShe is the founder of KILELE Health Association\, a Kenyan non-profit organization located in Nairobi\, with a mandate to operate in the country’s 47 Counties. \nKILELE Health specializes in empowering people living with chronic conditions (cancer and other NCDs) and their caregivers to use their lived experiences as advocacy tools for disease prevention\, stigma reduction and improvement of quality of life beyond the diagnosis. The organization is committed to engaging members and other stakeholders in improving the understanding of quality of life issues. Current programmes focus on advocacy\, behaviour change communications\, capacity building\, and exchange of best practice\, research\, and resourcing. This is achieved through promotion of physical activity\, mental wellness\, financial wellness and pursuit of optimal health; as tools for the attainment of wellbeing. \nBenda sits on various global\, regional and local Technical Working Groups in an advocacy and advisory role. She co-chairs the AORTIC Advocacy Special Interest Group regionally in Africa\, and in Kenya is Co-Chair of the STOP Cervical Cancer technical working group. She is also a Trainer\, Facilitator and Public Speaker in advocacy for Women’s Health. Previously she served on the Board of Women4Cancer for nine years\, a Kenyan NGO she co-founded in 2012\, whose Vision is a Cervical Cancer Free Kenya. \nShe has received various awards including the International Gynecologic Cancer Society (IGCS) Distinguished Advocacy Award 2019\, the Union for International Cancer Control (UICC) award to participate as the civil society voice in the Regional Consultation on the Elimination of Cervical Cancer in the African Region (May 2019). She is also the Cancer Ambassador of the Year 2016 in Kenya. \nAn alumni of the AORTIC Master Cancer Advocacy Trainer Programme in 2013\, her advocacy work includes writing the WHO Regional Office for Africa Advocacy for Cervical Cancer Prevention and Control in Africa Facilitator Manual in 2015 – 2017\, and Master Training of Expert Trainers of Trainers from 10 WHO AFRO Countries in use of the toolkit in Africa (2017). \nTo complement her advocacy with systems strengthening\, she undertook an Executive Diploma in Leading High Performing Healthcare Organisations Program (LeHHO) at the Strathmore Business School: Institute of Healthcare Management in Kenya (2016). In 2020\, she was also trained as a MOTH Story Teller\, a skill she is using to inspire others to tell their stories in advocacy\, acting as a catalyst for change. \nUnder the KILELE Challenge\, Benda summited Mt. DESCRIPTION:SPEAKER PROFILES: \nDr Khadija Warfa \nKhadija Warfa is a Consultant Gynecologic Oncologist\, who completed her gynaecological oncology fellowship at the University of Calgary\, Canada. \nCurrently Dr. Warfa is an Assistant Professor in the Department of Obstetrics and Gynecology at The Aga Khan University Hospital\, where she had done her Obstetrics and Gynecology residency training. She is involved in the training and supervision of postgraduate students. \nDr. Warfa is a member of the African Cancer Coalition and European society of gynecologic oncology (ESGO). She is involved in the Harmonized NCCN guidelines and is a technical advisor to the Kenya National cancer treatment protocols with the objective to reduce mortality related to Gynecologic Cancers in Kenya. \nDr Amina Kidee Habib \nAmina K. Habib is a Medical Oncologist at the Aga Khan University Hospital\, Nairobi. \nShe holds a Master of Medicine in Internal medicine and Fellowship in Medical Oncology from the University of Nairobi. \nDr Habib was previously the Head of the Oncology Department\, Aga Khan Hospital in Mombasa where she championed multi-disciplinary approach to cancer management at the facility aimed at improving patient outcomes and organized several awareness campaign activities. \nDr. Habib has keen interest in breast cancer\, GI malignancy\, and translational research. \nShe also has a keen interest in mentorship program aimed at bridging gaps in clinical practise among young medical/clinical practitioners. \nModerator: Dr Gregory Ganda \nGregory Ganda is a renowned Gynecologist oncologist at Jaramogi Oginga Odinga Teaching and Referral Hospital (JOOTRH). He currently runs the oncology clinic at the facility and does his private practice at various private facilities in Kisumu including but not limited to the Bloom surgical center\, Aga Khan Hospital\, Kisumu Specialist Hospital. He runs the gynecology oncology clinic at JOOTRH on Tuesdays and splits the rest of his time in the wards and in the theatre. \nDr Ganda is currently the County Executive Committee (CEC) Member for Health in Kisumu County (County Minister for Health) \nHis work as a medical officer in remote areas in Voi\, where women had bad obstetric outcomes led him to start the hot tea initiative (where women who had delivered were given hot tea and baby shawls as a motivation for hospital delivery)\, renovation and opening of the theater which led to his special recognition and Master’s sponsorship. He went into Oncology after having met many patients with poor survival rates after lack of access to specialty care and wanted to make a difference. \nHis vision for the Kisumu County Cancer Alliance is to have a platform where all like-minded partners work together for the common good of the people of Kisumu to improve cancer outcomes by having an infrastructure for screening\, early detection\, and treatment to improve survival for cancer patients. \nHis hobbies involve being outdoors\, traveling\, hiking\, and rock climbing. \nDr Ganda has a Master of Medicine in Gynecology oncology from Makerere University and a fellowship in gynecology oncology from Moi University in collaboration with the University of Toronto.
