Access to Cancer Treatment in Kenya

The Max Foundation, a global nonprofit organization, has been supporting access to cancer treatment
in Kenya since 2002. Through partnerships with the Ministry of Health and several public and private
hospitals, two programs are currently active:
1. Chronic Myeloid Leukemia (CML) Access Program
Patients with CML can receive Imatinib (Glivec) at no cost under the Max Access Solutions (MAS)
program. Treatment is available at:
- Nairobi Hospital
- Moi Teaching and Referral Hospital (Eldoret)
- Nakuru Provincial General Hospital
- Jaramogi Oginga Odinga Teaching and Referral Hospital (Kisumu)
- Coast Provincial General Hospital (Mombasa)
- Kenyatta University Teaching, Referral and Research Hospital
This is supported by the Ministry of Health through the National Cancer Control Program (NCCP),
which coordinates logistics and tax exemptions for medication distribution via KEMSA.
2. Advanced Breast Cancer Access Program
Since 2024, patients with advanced breast cancer have been able to access Abemaciclib and
Letrozole free of charge through a second initiative. Services are currently available at:
- Nairobi Hospital
- Kenyatta University Teaching, Referral and Research Hospital
To date, over 190 patients have been enrolled.
3. Additional Patient Support Services
Through collaboration with Henzo Kenya, the program also offers:
- Transportation support
- Peer and psychosocial support
- Patient education and awareness
Currently, more than 2,000 patients across the two programs are receiving continuous treatment and support.
