Speakers Profiles

DR MUSILA MUTALA

Musila Mutala is a Consultant Radiologist and Cancer Imaging Specialist.

He is a lecturer in the Department of Diagnostic Imaging and Radiation Medicine at the University of Nairobi.

He holds a Bachelor’s degree in Medicine and Surgery from the University of Nairobi and a Master’s in Radiology from the same institution. He also holds a Master’s in Oncologic Imaging from the University of Pisa, Italy.

Dr Mutala practices in General Radiology and Cancer Imaging. He has voluminous experience in Gastrointestinal, Hepatobiliary, Genitourinary and Gynecologic tumors.

His research interests are in Oncologic Imaging, Diagnostic Tests Accuracy and Radiology Education.

Dr Mutala has published several articles in local and international peer reviewed journals. He has presented papers in local and international radiology and oncology conferences, some with awards. He has attended various hands-on training courses and workshops on specific cancer sites imaging in Europe, UK, US and Hong Kong.

DR ROSE NDUMIA (Moderator)

Rose Ndumia is a consultant radiologist in Breast Imaging. She obtained her medical degree from the University of Nairobi and her Radiology Residency in Radiology at the Aga Khan University Hospital, Nairobi. She also completed a one-year fellowship in diagnostic and interventional breast imaging from the Marleen Greenebaum Diagnostic Breast Centre, Hadassah University Hospital in Jerusalem, Israel with observership experience at the Memorial Sloan Kettering Cancer Centre’s Breast Imaging Center in New York. She has keen interests in breast imaging, medical education, and research.

She is the section head of breast imaging at AKUHN and is actively involved in the acquisition of state-of-the art imaging equipment and initiation of new procedures such as Digital mammography with 3D tomosynthesis, Stereotactic biopsies, Vacuum Assisted Biopsy (VAB), clip insertions and Occult lesion localizations. She takes the Radiology lead in the weekly multidisciplinary breast tumor board meetings and is the current Program Director for the Radiology Residency Training Program.

Her research interests are mainly in breast cancer, assessment of mammographic breast density, global health, and medical education. At a policy level, she has worked in conjunction with the Kenya Association of Radiologists and the National Cancer Control Program to develop national breast cancer screening guidelines as well as national imaging guidelines. She also collaborates with both local and international colleagues in an endeavor to continuously improve patient care.
