Dr Mohammed Ezzi – Beyond the Visible: Unmasking Soft Tissue Sarcoma in the Heart of Africa
Soft tissue sarcomas are rare malignant tumors of mesenchymal origin, accounting for under 1% of adult cancers. A review at Kenyatta National Hospital showed large tumor sizes (avg. 13 cm), high recurrence (78%), and better outcomes with radical excisions.
Chemotherapy regimens in Ethiopia predominantly included Adriamycin-based combinations. However, access to radiotherapy remains limited, impacting outcomes. Timely radiotherapy, as seen in Tanzania, improves survival.
Key gaps include limited resources, lack of local treatment guidelines, and minimal access to specialists. Future efforts should focus on building regional sarcoma centers, local research, and developing Africa-specific management guidelines.
