Dr. Dabar Abdi Maalim
Dr. Abdi Maalim is the immediate former Commissioner with Ethics and Anti-Corruption Commission (EACC – Kenya) and chaired the Commission’s committee on Corruption Prevention, Education and Public Engagement. He was also a Member of the Transition Authority, that ushered the Devolved System of Government in Kenya. In 1996, he won a Commonwealth Scholarship where he pursued his Ph.D. in Community Health at the University of Reading (UK). He also holds Masters Degree from Wales College of Medicine, Cardiff (UK) and is an alumnus of Department of Nursing Sciences, University of Nairobi (UON). Dr. Maalim has over 15 years of experience as a university academician having worked at Moi and the Aga Khan Universities, East Africa.
Dr. Maalim has worked and /or consulted with various national and international institutions including Government of Kenya, DANIDA, UNICEF-Ethiopia, and World Health Organisation (WHO) both in Kenya and Eritrea among others. He was the Team Leader/Science Coordinator of the Millennium Villages Project (Kenya) and Associate Research Scientist – Earth Institute, Columbia University USA between November 2010 and January 2012.
Dr. Maalim has also done extensive research and has several publications to his credit, particularly in the area of access to preventive health care services for the disadvantaged communities, and hence developed “The Disenfranchised Community Model”. He also served between 2004 – 2013 as a Presidential Appointee to the National Anti -Corruption Campaign Steering Committee (NACCSC) where the major role was to sensitize and stigmatize the Kenyan community against the evils of corruption.
Dr. Maalim is one of the founding members of Umma University (Kenya) – a project of Direct Aid International/ Africa Muslims Agency, which is one of very few Muslim universities in Kenya. Currently, he is an Honorary Director of NEP College of Health Sciences, Garissa (which is sponsored by Kenya Muslims Charitable Society – Kenya), the Chairman, Academic Council, Kismayu University (Somalia) and Chairman, Kenya Trust Board of International Open University (IOU) in the Gambia.
