Dr Abdi Hakin Mohamed did his Surgical Residency at the Aga Khan Hospital, Nairobi and Surgical Oncology Fellowship at the prestigious Memorial Sloan- Kettering Cancer Centre in New York, USA where he was the first ever Clinical Fellow from the African continent. At Memorial Sloan Kettering, he worked with world-renowned colorectal surgeons and was involved in research projects in the institution as well as operating on patients using the most highly advanced surgical equipment, including Robotic Colorectal Surgery for colon and rectal cancer. Dr Abdi has been part of local colorectal cancer trials with his mentor the late Prof Saidi Hassan, and has published the most widely quoted colorectal cancer study in East Africa.
Dr Abdi works both in the private sector and public sector. He is the Chair of Surgery at the Aga Khan Hospital in Mombasa, and is currently involved in treating cancer patients who need surgery in Mombasa. He is the coordinator of the fellowship division of the COSECSA (College of Surgeons of East, Central and Southern Africa) surgical training program at Coast General Teaching and Research Hospital which is the largest COSECSA program in East Africa.
