Abeid M. Athman Omar, MD, MMed
Dr. Abeid Athman is a Consultant Clinical Oncologist and Head of the Oncology Department at Kenyatta University Teaching, Referral and Research Hospital (KUTRRH) in Nairobi, Kenya.
Dr. Abeid completed his undergraduate degree at Luhansk State Medical University (LSMU) in Luhansk, Ukraine. He underwent clinical oncology and nuclear medicine training at the Department of Clinical Oncology and Nuclear Medicine, Faculty of Medicine at Alexandria University in Egypt. He is a fellow and graduate of the European School of Oncology (ESO), in Milan, Italy.
Although Dr. Abeid manages patients across all cancer sites, his primary focus is on breast cancer management, particularly in young women, as well as oncofertility and oncosexuality. Moreover, he has a keen interest in lung cancer, global oncology and access to cancer care in LMIC. Dr. Abeid has published in peer-reviewed journals and serves as a peer reviewer for several international journals. He has presented several abstracts at international conferences (ESMO, ASCO, ASTRO, ESTRO, SABCS, AORTIC) and was awarded Best Poster in the Breast Cancer Category at the ESMO 2024 Congress. Currently, Dr. Abeid serves on several committees within the Ministry of Health in Kenya, where he is actively involved in the formulation of national cancer policies and guidelines through the National Cancer Institute of Kenya and the National Cancer Control Programme (NCCP). He also serves on the NCCN Harmonised Guidelines for Sub-Saharan Africa, the AORTIC Access to Innovative Technologies and Therapies Special Interest Group and as the ASCO Community Champion of the African Community of Practice. Previously, he served on the Education and Outreach Committees of Kenya Society of Haematology and Oncology (KESHO) and Scientific Co-Chair of the 8th Kenya International Cancer Conference. He is the current Scientific Chair of the Africa Radiation Oncology Group (AFROG) Scientific Conference. In January 2026, Dr. Abeid was appointed as a Council Member in the ESMO leadership.
Dr. Abeid has been recognized with several awards, including the ASCO Virtual mentoring Program, ASCO IDEA Award, ESO Clinical Visit Breast Cancer Fellowship, the Top 40 under 40 Business Daily Award (Men’s Category), the 100 Most influential Muslims in Kenya (Medicine Category) and the Oncodaily Yvone Award, among others. He also received multiple grants,including the inaugural Oncoalert Catalyst Grant for LMIC and the National Cancer Institute of Kenya Oncology Grant.
