Profile

Prof. Malkit S. Riyat, an Associate Professor in haematology, completed his MBChB from the University of Nairobi in 1978. He was awarded a World Health Organization (WHO) scholarship and went on to do his membership in haematology from The Royal Infirmary, Glasgow in 1987. He was appointed as a Fellow of the Royal College of Pathologists in Haematology in 1997. He was Conferred fellowship of the College of Pathologists East Central and Southern Africa in 2014. He obtained a Certificate of Competence in Malignant Lymphomas (CCL) in 2017 – 2018 from University of ULM, Germany

Prof. Riyat has authored multiple publications in peer review journals as well as many abstracts and has served on the editorial board of multiple peer review journals.  He has been instrumental in graduate medical education, developing the curricula for the clinical pathology residency program and served as the first program director when the residency was initially initiated at the Aga Khan University Hospital in Nairobi. In 2002 he successfully implemented and coordinated the GIPAP program in Kenya through which patients with CML, GIST and several other disorders get free access to glivec.

KEY ACCOMPLISHMENTS AND ACTIVITIES

 

  • Appointed member of the Editorial Board of ‘The East African Medical Journal’ May 1999
  • Successfully implemented and coordinated the GIPAP program in Kenya through which patients with CML and GIST get free access to glivec – 2002
  • Appointed a core member of the team to develop the National Policy on the guidelines for the appropriate use of blood and blood related products by the Ministry of Health, Kenya – 2002
  • Spent four weeks at Imperial College, Hammersmith Hospital in London (7th May 2010 – 4th June 2010) on an International iCMLf-ERSAP Preceptorship Program fellowship and trained in molecular monitoring and management of patients with Chronic Myeloid Leukemia
  • Program Director – (Clinical pathology and Anatomic Pathology) Department of Pathology, Aga Khan University Hospital – Nairobi. (2005 – 2012)
  • Was actively involved in and was a resource person for haematology and pathology in the development of the undergraduate Medicine curriculum for the Aga Khan University based in Nairobi
  • Was responsible for setting up of flow cytometry / immunophenotyping program in the laboratory at the Aga Khan University Hospital in Nairobi
  • Was instrumental in setting up of the Hospital Blood Transfusion Committee of the Aga Khan University Hospital in Nairobi and I developed the transfusion guidelines for the Hospital
