Dr. Esther Nafula is a dedicated Palliative Medicine Physician with over thirteen years of
experience in clinical care, education, and leadership. She has served across government
and private sectors, providing comprehensive palliative and home-based care to patients in
diverse settings.
She currently leads a multidisciplinary team to strengthen patient-centered care at the
Kenyatta National Hospital (KNH). She also serves as a part-time lecturer at the Kenya
Medical Training College (KMTC) and Moi Teaching and Referral Hospital (MTRH), where
she trains and mentors healthcare professionals in pain management and palliative care.
Dr. Nafula also holds leadership positions as the Head of Pain & Palliative Care Unit KNH,
Director on the Board of Trustees of the International Children’s Palliative Care Network
(ICPN) and Council Member of the Public Health Palliative Care Initiative (PHPCI). Her
expertise extends to health policy, clinical ethics, and guideline development at institutional
and national levels.
She is passionate about advancing evidence-based palliative care and fostering
compassionate, competent healthcare teams dedicated to improving the quality of life for
patients and families.
