KESHO Member Spotlight: Dr Michael Mwachiro

Dr. Michael Mwachiro on Surgical Education, Innovation and Global Collaboration

President, Surgical Society of Kenya | KESHO Member Spotlight

As a KESHO member and President of the Surgical Society of Kenya, Dr. Michael Mwachiro was recently hosted by Stanford University as the Kovitz Visiting Professor, where he delivered a lecture titled “Leveraging Global Collaborations and Innovation for Research, Training and Mentorship in Surgery.”

During the visit, Dr. Mwachiro reflected on the role of collaboration in strengthening surgical education, mentorship and training across Kenya and the wider COSECSA region. His lecture highlighted how academic partnerships, digital learning platforms and sustained mentorship can support the development of surgical capacity across diverse training environments.

The visit also included an observership with Stanford’s advanced endoscopy programme, providing opportunities to engage with faculty, trainees and simulation-based learning in minimally invasive surgery and endoscopic care. These areas are increasingly relevant to cancer care, particularly in strengthening early diagnosis, referral pathways and multidisciplinary treatment planning.

For KESHO, this member feature highlights the important role of surgical leadership within oncology. As cancer care continues to evolve, strong collaboration between surgeons, oncologists, pathologists, radiologists, researchers and other specialists remains essential to improving outcomes for patients across Kenya and the region.

Dr. Mwachiro’s work reflects the value of regional expertise, global partnerships and mentorship in building stronger health systems for cancer care.
